-Richest Greek city with good mineral mines-The Athenian settlement at Amphipolis motivates the revolt
-Other cities do not revolt with Thasos b/c hate each other more than they had Athens. If they revolted together would win rather than lose by themselves
- Athens using force on an ally without the threat of Persia to justify it becomes tyrannical without the threat of Persia
