Ampex’ first tape record the ‘Ampex Model 200’, was first shipped in 1948. The first two units were used to record the Bing Crosby show. ABC (American Broadcasting Company) used these recorders with 3m scotch 111 gamma ferric oxide coated acetate tape for the first ever US delayed radio broadcast of The Bing Crosby Show. Les Paul a friend of corsby and regular guest on his shows, had already been experimenting with overdubbing on discs. He received an early portable ‘Ampex Model 200A’ from Crosby. Les Paul created ‘Sound on Sound recording using this machine.
