aug 16, 1845 - The Great Hunger

Description:

A type of Potato Blight occurring in Ireland resulted in massive famines as the Irish were heavily dependent on potatoes.

With Anglo-American tensions at a high low with British interference in Hawai'i and the Mosquito Coast, the Americans would refuse to aid the British. Instead, the Americans offered aid to any Irish who came to America.

As time worsened, many Irish fled the country to America and British north America, or attempted to get caught committing crimes in order to be sent to Australia.

By the end of the famine in 1852, an estimated 1.5 million were dead; over 40% of Irelands population had either died or fled to other lands.
