jul 9, 1903 - The Formation of The Women’s Social and Political Union
Description:
The Women’s Social and Political Union was an all-women rebel organization that fought against the Independent Labour Party for the rights of women from 1903 to 1917. After feeling like there was not enough support for the women that were in the party, Emmeline Pankhurst formed the Women’s Social and Political Union after she consulted with women that were also in the Independent Labour Party. In 1905, after having another bill rejected in Parliament, the Women’s Social and Political Union decided that it was a time for change in the ways that they went against the government. The new Women’s Social and Political Union system would not support any part of the Parliament that did not benefit women. During the time of this movement, the motive behind the started to increase in a hostile manner. Now, members of the Women’s Social and Political Union were destroying Independent Labour Party property and having hunger strikes. However, during the chaos of the protests, some women were also fighting through the use of literature. The Women’s Social and Political Union and other women alike used literature not only to persuade people to join their union but they also used literature as a means of an explanation for their violent actions and also to mock Parliament and the Independent Labour Party itself. The women also used forms of literature as a way to show men that they also were equal in the workforce by forming The Suffragette.
