apr 16, 1912 - Titanic - Cultural development

Description:

The RMS Titanic was seen as a monumental icon of the 20th century. It definitely shocked a lot of being as it sank after it struck an iceberg. There were not enough lifeboats to save people, changing the lives of several individuals. From those who survived and those whose lives were impact by their dead loved ones. Just two days after the Titanic had sunk, several UK newspapers were already distributing the news out such as the Daily Mirror, London Herald, and the Daily Mail. Each were stating how it was a tragic loss of the world’s largest liner. Just about everyone in the world was talking about this shocking event. Like how could this have happened to the Titanic? Everyone thought the ship was unsinkable, yet it did sink, just from hitting an iceberg. Those who survived never fully recovered from the experience. People who lost everything on the ship had lost basically their only source of financial income, so the public would give out charitable donations for them. People began to care about the survivors and they became quite popular since the sinking. The survivors ended up writing books about their experiences and movies of the ship. Investigators like Robert Ballard discovered the Titanic wreak in 1985 which lead to the 1997 movie Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Not only did this event impact the survivors and those who heard about it, it also impacted the development of safety out on sea as well as improve the ships that were told to be “unsinkable.” For two years after the disaster, navy ships and the coast guards were out patrolling the seas. In1914, an international ice patrol was formed called the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. They were monitoring iceberg presence and movements at sea. This would indefinitely help future ships making passage across the sea. A rule was made to have enough lifeboats and space for everyone on board a vessel. The Radio Act of 1912 was passed to issue the regulation of bandwidths between the US Navy and radio operators so help could be heard from a distance.
