The first diamonds in South Africa were found on the southern banks of the Orange River.This was a significant event as the discovery of diamonds led to the establishment of the De Beers Consolidated Mines company by British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes. At one point, De Beers produced 95% of the world's diamonds and even today is still a major company with a global presence.
