feb 21, 1828 - Brazil establishes forts in Africa

Description:

In the later days of the Cisplatine War, a ship containing a few of the leaders who has lost faith along with several of their followers fled the River Plate. Commander James Norton, who was blockading the region, spotted this ship and ordered his two divisions to give chase.

The rebels attempted to flee to Portuguese Angola, but bad whether and the pursuing Brazilians, would lead them to seek shelter in Walvis Bay. They succeed in holding off Norton and docking.

The Brazilian fleet retreats only to return in April with four division under Norton and diplomats to demand the return of the rebels. They instead discover the rebels have fled inland. With approval from Brazil, Norton establishes a fort in the region to guard against the rebels return.

They name the fort after the names given to Walvis Bay by Bartolomeu Dias; O Golfo de Santa Maria da Conceição. The growth of the region would remain fairly small, with other forts being established along the coast.

In 1836, the Rio de Janeiro Missionary Society would largely take over the region, establishing missionaries both along the coast and inland. They would also purchase missionaries from the London Missionary Society in 1847.
