apr 6, 1652 - VOC Developments on the Cape

Description:

The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) or VOC sent a small expedition led by Jan van Riebeeck to begin the development of a new trading outpost. The Dutch did not have any interest in colonising the area at the time and merely sought to create a base camp where passing ships could be serviced and sheltered. This was the first move by the Dutch that would result in a large part of South African history moving forward.
