jan 1, 1000 - Leif Erikson
Description:
Leif Erikson was born in Iceland to Erik the Red and Thjodhild. He traveled to Norway to meet King Olaf Tryggvason to convert to Christianity and he financed his voyage back. Many theories suggest he was blown off course going back to Iceland but landed in Vinland (present day Newfoundland). He named it Vinland because of the numerous grape vines. His motivation is suggested as wanting to spread Christianity. He accomplished bringing back grapes and wheat to Iceland to practice Christian rituals. One interesting fact is Leif Erikson Day is celebrated on October 9th because that marks the day Scandinavians immigrated to America.
