Description:
Following the 1852 tornado in St. Barthélemy, the economy began a steady descent, with expenses rising. In early 1877, negotiations began to return the island to France, which ended in August with an agreement.
In a referendum was held in January of 1878, which was 100% in favor, and in March the islands were transferred to France.
