With the Civil War coming to an end, the United States wanting to establish a proper base in the Caribbean. This combined with the loss of St. Croix by the Danish, called the request to purchase the remainder of the Danish islands in the America's.

After a January referendum in the Danish West Indies shows 98% in favor of the sale, Denmark sold the Islands of Saint John and Saint Thomas to the United States for $7.5 million.
