feb 11, 1780 - 1780: Robert Raikes opens his first Sunday School

Description:

During the industrial revolution in the late 1700’s, masses of lower class people moved to cities to work in factories, including young children. They had to work in gruesome surroundings, and Sunday was the only day they didn't have to work. These children often committed crimes, and Robert Raikes, a devout member of the Church of England, saw this as something Christians should be concerned about. So, in 1780, Raikes started his first “Sunday school”, where these children could be taught to read and write while instructed on moral Christian living. Though he was not the first to establish a Sunday School, Raikes publicized it and played a major role in starting the Sunday School Movement.
