jan 11, 2014 - Assesment of Possible Flooding Risks

Description:

There was question that adding the rapids back into the river would increase the chances of the Grand River flooding even more than it already does so Jason Carey, the developer of the restoration plans made a statement. He said that they are working with the state and federal regulators to "partially remove the Sixth Street Dam, remove all of the low-rise dams in downtown Grand Rapids, and restore rocks and shoals to the riverbed down to Fulton Street. Within this plan they are only focusing on the low river flow, around 2,500 cubic feet per second of flow. The removal of the dams won't make a difference because April of 2013's flood levels reached a total of 36,00 cfs and a 100 year flood would hit levels up to 50,000 cfs, so the levels they are looking at are way smaller than that.
