Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, and the half-sister of Queen Mary I. Many Protestant exiles from Mary’s reign came back and held positions in the Church of England when Queen Elizabeth began to rule. In an effort to suppress tensions between Protestants and Catholics, she merged a centralized Episcopal system with Protestant doctrine and Catholic tradition.
