jan 1, 578 - Death of Abdul Mutalib ibn Hashim

Description:

Death of the grandfather of the Prophet (s). Prophet (s) was 8 years old.

Abdul Mutalib cared for him until he was 8 years old. Abdul Mutalib entrusted him with his uncle, Abi Talib. The brother of his father from the same mother, Fatimah, and father.

Abdul Mutalib went to extreme lengths to care for the Prophet. He sent the prophet to go after his camels since it was lost. And Abdul Mutalib waited for him to return. After that, he did not send the Prophet out alone out of worry. He only allowed the Prophet to sit near him next to the Kaba while he was sleeping. He only allowed the Prophet to sit in his chair, no one else. He had a cot next to the kaba. His children would sit around him, but the prophet was the only one allowed to sit with him.

Abdul Mutalib's father was Hashim.

Hashim
o Son of Abd Manaf
o Gave not only water but food to the pilgrims. He was very generous, and took on a huge responsibility. Continuous charity
o His actual name was Amr, but called Hashim because of the action of “ح ش م” meaning to break bread. He would add bread to the soup to make it hearty. He would prepare the food himself and break the bread himself. One special days he would give فريد a very high quality soup with meat, fat, lentils, and chickpea.
o He added a second caravan trip. In the winter, go south to Yemen and in the summer, go north to Sham. He increased the money coming into Mecca.
o Not only the leader of Mecca, but also a businessman. He would travel to Sham himself. The one stop to Sham was always Medina.
o He noticed a big difference between Mecca and Medina. Mecca very hot and not conducive for growing, but Medina is cool and lot of agriculture. He liked Medina. He met a woman named Salma bint Amr from Banu Najar and married her. The Prophet (s) visited the tribe of Banu Najar to spend time with his distant relatives.
o He continued business to Sham and she stayed in Medina because she was pregnant. He passed away in Gaza in Sham (Palestine). When the news reached Salma that her husband had died, she was afraid that the people of Mecca would take her child. She made a decision to not send news to Mecca about the marriage and keep it a secret. She gave birth to a boy who had white strands of hair, so she named him Shayba-tul-Hamd.
o Hashim had 4 sons and 5 daughters from different wives.
o After his passing, there is a lot of political unrest. News came to Mecca about Shayba, and everyone thought he would be a great leader, especially since his mother is from a good tribe. Also Shayba is free from the politics and fighting.
o One of Hashim’s brothers named Al-Mutalib travels to Medina to take Shayba back to Mecca to be the ruler. Salma let Shayba decide. Shayba said he will not go without his mother’s permission. Salma agreed because she wanted her son to live near the Kaba and be a leader of the Kaba. When he came back, people confused the boy to be Mutalib’s slave, so they called him Abdul-Mutalib.

Abdul-Mutalib
o Mutalib passed away in Yemen on a trip.
o So Abdul Mutalib assumes the responsibilities of Hashim and Mutalib. One of the sons of Hashim, Nawfal, felt threatened by Abdul Mutalib (AM). There is a power struggle between them. AM calls on his supporters from Medina to support him, so AM wins.
o He had 5 wives and 10 sons and 6 daughter.
♣ One daughter, Umm Hakim was albino, but very dear to the Prophet (s)
