The battle of Somme started on July 1, 1916 and ended on November 18 1916.The battle of Somme was one of WW1 most deadliest battles. On the first day of the battle, 58,000 British troops were killed. The French and British were prepared for a battle of attrition and wanted to wear down the German forces for the French defenders of Verdun. The British had brought artillery but, found little success since the Germans were hiding in hard to find dugouts. No Canadians were at the attack on the first day but were at Beaumont Hamel. There were 386 wounded and 324 killed Canadian troops out of 801
