may 4, 1924 - Games of the VIII Olympiad Begin

Description:

Berlin was selected to host the games in 1916. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Weltkrieg forced the cancellation of the games. The 1920 games in Antwerp were also cancelled, despite the end of the primary fighting. Upon the end of the war, it was decided that Berlin would host the next Olympics. In a consolatory gesture, Germany invited members of the Entente powers to join the games. Bitter over their defeat, France declined to participate. The United Kingdom, faced with major economic problems and domestic unrest, accepted the invitation in order to boost morale. Neither the Communes of France nor the Italian Socialist Republic were allowed to participate, causing strain within the Olympic Committee that eventually led to the establishment of the International Workers' Olympiads as a socialist alternative to the Olympic Games.
