Following the election of the National Consolidation Party in 1925 led by Edward Marsh Merewether, the West Indies first election since self-rule, negotiations began with the French over the incorporation of the French West Indies due to the rising of socialist movements even higher than the British West Indies, with the French officially signing over their colonies in May of 1927.
