dec 25, 1979 - Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
Description:
On December 25, 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support its communist government against anti-communist Muslim guerrillas. Tens of thousands of Soviet troops flooded the capital, Kabul, and soon assassinated the Afghan President Hafizullah Aminon on December 27 when they occupied his presidential palace. Major regions within the country were subsequently overtaken by Soviet military control for about a decade. This was a clear violation of SALT agreements, which led to countering military attacks by NATO, as well as various protests against the Soviet Union’s actions.
