jan 2, 1988 - FTA Signed

Description:

Prime Minister Mulroney began negotiations with America in 1987 for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). By October 4, 1987, conditions were finalized, although the agreement was signed later on signed January 2, 1988. It removed tariffs on goods, and opened investment opportunities for each country. This was advantageous because it increased market growth and productivity, and attracted the US to Canada's resources and workers. However, it limited Canada's independence from the US, and hurt Canadian-manufactured products, as American products were often cheaper and more popularized.
