Operation U-98 was a dangerous strategic decision which involved air dropping 46,000 soldiers and 126 tanks into the major city of Sao Paulo to try and hold the territory.A large percentage of the transport planes were shot down by Russian jets which accidentally encountered the transports while they approached the South Atlantic. The forces that made it to the ground were able to overthrow the cities garrison but were wiped out by nightfall. 12,000 soldiers were imprisoned and the other 34,000 were lost. The attack was one of the largest North Brazilian losses during the conflict.
