jan 11, 1867 - May Protectorate
Description:
The United Kingdom recognized the Chan Santa Cruz as de facto independent in their early years due to their strong trade relationship with British Honduras. Following the Mayan Ceasefire of 1855, the British began slowly increasing their influence in Chan Santa Cruz. Following their realization that France was going to establish a French Client State in Mexico, the British and Maya opened negotiations to offer protection in exchange for sovereignty.
In 1867, the Chan Santa Cruz was replaced by the May Protectorate. The United States would refuse to recognize this treaty, but with the civil war underway, they couldn't afford a war with the British until after the war. Additionally, they didn't control the territory prior to the treaty, marking little change in the de facto Political situation.
