dec 25, 1991 - Soviet Union ceases to exist and the Cold War effectively ends
Description:
The Soviet Union is finally disbanded and separates into over a dozen different countries. The West celebrated this as a victory over communism and totalitarianism. The disbanding occurred as a result of the loss of control the Union had over Eastern Europe, combined with a faltering economy. This is when the Cold War is considered to have come to an end.
