jan 1, 1865 - Abolishment of slavery in USA (1865)
Description:
By the time slavery was abolished in America, there were over 4 million African slaves in the United States. This occured after the end of the Civil War.
These slaves came from areas all over Africa, meaning there was a variety of languages being spoken by these slaves.
Slaves working in plantations of the South came from areas all over Africa, meaning there was a huge variety in different languages spoken by this people. These slaves could be fluent three to six African languages- this caused the mixing of English with these languages in communication between captives, creating a ‘pidgin’ (a simplified language that was easy for non-native speakers to learn and use).
