dec 31, 1899 - Colonialism & The British Empire

Description:

British colonisation began as early as the 16th century, but gathered momentum between the 18th and 20th centuries. Britain's dealings with exotic countries and the increase in world trading as a whole resulted in introduction of many foreign loanwords into English. For example, Australia gave English a new set of words such as boomerang, kangaroo, budgerigar etc., and India gave English everyday word such as pyjamas, thug, bungalow, jungle cot, shampoo and many others. The rise of the British Empire was another large historical factor that contributed to Late Modern English as during this time English adopted many foreign words and made them its own.
