In retaliation to Russia's attack on Turkey, in order to gain control of the Black Sea, England and France align with the Ottoman Empire. England and France put aside a past of great conflict.

Britain, although it had the smallest army, was able to come out of the Crimean War with the least amount of casualties. At the end of the war, Britain was able to rise from the rubble of war with the greatest long-term outcome. Their victory allowed for their even greater expansion and they became known as a global empire. This is how the became known as the “Empire on which the sun never sets.” (War and Peace)
