jun 23, 1990 - The Meech Lake Accord Dies
Description:
On April 30, 1987, Prime Minister Mulroney reopened the discussion on the Constitution with the Meech Lake Accord, this time intending for Quebec to ratify. The new constitution would recognize Quebec as a distinct society, and give all provinces greater power. The accord received a lot of backlash from the Aboriginal community, who were also fighting for similar recognition as a distinct society. Another reason for some not support the accord was that they believed it would allow Quebec to revoke certain rights from minority groups. After lots of debate, Manitoba and Newfoundland withdrew their support, and the accord died on June 23, 1990.
