may 20, 1980 - Sovereignty-Association Referendum

Description:

As an alternative to Quebec's separation from Canada, the idea of Sovereignty-Association was proposed by Parti Quebecois founder, Rene Levesque. He was attempting to achieve full political independence for Quebec, while still maintaining its economic association with Canada. If mandated after a provincial referendum on May 20, 1980, Levesque would be given the opportunity to negotiate terms of the proposal with the federal government. The result of the referendum was a 60% "no" vote, but Levesque was still hopeful that Quebec may one day reach Sovereignty.
