President Reagan pledged to do so the same year it was created, and the current administration is proposing to merge it with the Department of Labor, to become the Department of Education and the Workforce.The department is largely responsible for giving grants to states and handling regulations. The grants have helped countless students over the years, but the amount of people opposed to it suggests that it is less than a success.
Critics argue that education should be a state and local matter.
