Description:
Following Stanford, Steinbeck moved to New York City to become a freelance writer. He found work as a construction worker and a newspaper reporter, but he returned to California after an unsuccessful year. For the next three years, he worked as a caretaker of a Lake Tahoe estate. During this time, he had copious amounts of time to draft his first novel.
