Description:

After beginning college in 1919, the struggling author left Stanford in 1925 without graduating. During these 5 years of school, Steinbeck dropped in and out of the university. He took off his fall quarters to work either for a nearby factory or for company ranches throughout the state. When he worked, he met migrants and itinerants which gave him an appreciation for manual laborers, the disenfranchised, and the dislocated. This empathy took root in his later novels that depicted the struggle and stories of working class individuals.
