Fear of Christianity and possible economic and political domination were the reasons behind the official Tokugawa policy of seclusion which took effect during the 1630's.
Leaders such as Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu felt that Christians couldn't be completely trusted as loyal Japanese because their true allegiance would be to the pope.
