A fence of staves or wooden posts. 1651 <i>George Clarke … did unlawfully breake and enter into six roodes of hedgins called a stafe hedge,</i> Royston (QS1); 1669 <i>an encroachment of four or five yards in length of a stafe hedge at the back of his quickset,</i> Leeds (Th26/143). Wright also has ‘staff-and-band hedge’, defined as a hedge of stakes interlaced with twigs (EDD).
