Description:
It was originally used exclusively of horses and is thought to be ‘apple-gray’, perhaps with reference to dark, roundish spots on a gray background. 1400 <i>unum equum album sive dappeldgray</i>, Ripon (SS30/12); 1564 <i>2 fylles a dappell graye and a sowre baye,/i>, Marske (YRS152/131); 1577 <i>my stoned horse daple gray</i>, Easby (SS26/267); 1631 <i>sould one daple gray maire</i>, Adwalton (BAS7/63).
