jan 1, 1623 - ripper

Description:

A spelling of ‘rippier’, that is one who carries fish inland to sell. 1623 Marmaduke Potter of York ripper Recognizance £20, Scarborough (NYRO47/105). This man was elsewhere described as a pannierman, the usual word locally for such a trader. As ‘rippier’ was more usual in Sussex it is possible that it had been brought into east Yorkshire by fishermen from the south.
