Description:
A carpenter employed in the construction or fitting out of ships, an occupational term first noted in an Act of 1495 (OED). It was well established later in Hull, and a dozen examples have been noted there in the second half of the sixteenth century: 1570 <i>Thomas Adamson, shipcarpenter</i>, Hull (YRS19/1); 1601 <i>Henry Browne, shipcarpenter</i>, Hull (YRS24/16).
