Description:
A washing tub in which linen, cloth, or clothes more generally were steeped, in a lye of wood ashes. It was an old bleaching process. 1621 <i>A brewing tubb, a flasket, and a boucking tubb</i>, Slaidburn (YRS63/49). It was the source of the Lancashire surname Bowker (GRDict).
