jan 1, 1639 - shakeragg

Description:

In a case at the Quarter Sessions in December 1639 a Bramley yeoman was accused of addressing ‘contemptuous words’ to Henry Sikes of Hunslet, viz: thou shakeragg blewe beard (YRS154/173). According to Halliwell a shake-rag or shagrag was a mean, beggarly fellow, and the OED has both spellings from the sixteenth century.
