jan 1, 1582 - groyne

Description:

The first mention of this word is in an official document of 1582 and it has an obscure origin. All the OED references identify it as a sea defence but in 1710 one groyn of the piller of Mitton Bridge had to be rebuilt and this seems likely to have beens the angled part that faced upstream (QS1/49/4).
