jan 1, 1560 - brereball
Description:
From ‘brier-ball’ which may have been a gall found on rose-bushes. The contexts in which this word occurs suggest that it was a reference to the colour of cloth used in making items of clothing: 1528 a brereball jacket, Burley (Th9/261); 1543 a coterclothe of brereball, Potternewton (Th19/90); 1560 one brearball gown, Thorner (Th27/297). These and other references are all from the Leeds area.
