A person in charge of the palfreys or saddle horses. A well-documented by-name which was active into the fifteenth century at least and also gave rise to surnames: 1301 <i>De Willelmo Palefreyman, vjd,</i> Pickhill (YRS21/2); 1381 <i>Joseph Palfrayman</i>, Scorborough (PTER); 1404-5 ‘And he has delivered to John <i>Palfayman</i> for the fodder of the horses in the lord abbot’s stable’, Selby (SAR147).
