Description:

The Dissolution rental for Selby Abbey contains the following entry: 1540 <i>ther ys a wod upon the common pastur called Selby out woddes wherin ys conteyned by est</i>[imacion]<i> mccc scrudde okes worth vijd le oke</i> (YRS13/354). Halliwell and Wright both have ‘scruddy’ as a northern word for dwarfish or stunted, but no examples are given and the OED makes no mention of it. Similarly: 1579 <i>certain olde Skruddle Hessels</i>, Arncliffe (Whit2/492).
