If untanned hides had to be transported over a long distance they were soaked in brine to save them from decay. 1465 <i>3 salthydes</i> - from Dysart in Fife to Hull (YRS144/73); 1476 <i>saylinge oute of Scotland with his merchaundise ther bought … salt hides to the nombre of iiijc lxx</i>, York (YRS98/13). In the Act of 1535, by which the king sought to ensure that customs dues were paid on all exported leather, certificates had to be obtained for the movement of <i>salt or untanned hides … or any leather called backs or sole leather.</i>
