Description:

This was formerly a word for the male salmon during the spawning season and it is on record in Old English. I have noted references to kepyrs in the Calder near Halifax in 1430 and kepirs frye in the Colne in 1467 (MD225), evidence of how far upstream salmon could formerly be caught.
