jan 1, 1465 - bushman

Description:

Christopher Tayler of Hull was described as busshman when he died in 1588 (YRS22/123). The word appears to be peculiar to Hull and its origin can be found in a rental of the town’s lands: 1465 The busdyke of every busman for occupacon of itt, iiis iiijd (YRS141/116). The editor Rosemary Horrox explained that the Busdyke connected Hull’s fresh water supply to the town ditch and that the ‘busmen’ carried the water into the town.
