jan 1, 1552 - dandling
Description:
To dandle a child is to move it gently up and down in the arms or on the knee, but a ‘dandling’ was a pet or favourite, so the meaning in this case may be to ‘favoured treatment’, since it was used in a marriage settlement dispute. 1552 ‘sums of money promised and given in marriage with Alice daughter of [Charles] Turton, to Henry Jesope, and also for not ordering and dandellyng of the said Alis by the said Henry’, Cumberworth (YRS102/113).
