The title given to an officer whose task it was to see that customary practices regarding the taking of multure were observed. The term has been noted in co. Durham (OED) and north Yorkshire, in the first place as a by-name: 1301 <i> De Galfrido le Mult’grayve </i>, Sowerby by Thirsk (YRS21/86). It was a manorial office: 1572 <i> Radulphus Loftus et Willielmus Scrodder </i>[sic for Strodder?] <i> electi sunt in offic’ le multergraves de hoc anno et jurati </i>, West Witton (YAJ10/420).
