A common term in South Cave for part of a dwelling house. 1598 <i>In the backer end First a cowe ... sommer and winter hempe with the balkes</i> (Kaner199); 1598 <i>In the backer end First all the wood their an olde sythe and an old arke</i> (Kaner203). Kaner comments more fully on its use and quotes Harrison’s definition of it as the other half of an earlier long house used originally for livestock (Kaner17).
