jan 1, 1547 - hearth staff
Description:
A staff for use at the smithy hearth. In 1547 Richard King of Sheffield left to Otwell Cutler his servant the bellowes, a pair of tonges, a stovente, a harthe staffe (TWH13/81). The meaning of the latter two items is not at all clear but ‘stovente’ could be for stove vent; that is a pipe or chimney to convey away the smoke. The purpose of the hearth staff remains uncertain.
