Possibly a local spelling of ‘kerf’, that is a saw-cut, or incision (EDD). In the only example noted it was apparently a ring cut round the trunk of a tree. 1544 ‘no one may make the <i> kirffe </i> round growing trees nor strip trees of their bark’, Slaithwaite (MMF).Added to timeline:
